about

Three works that were composed separately without a unifying purpose, each realized over the course of several years of solitary conceptualizing and experimentation.

The eventual methodology was oblique; one of walking away and returning from different directions after losing perspective and shedding expectations. The process of returning with forgotten intent brought an objectivity often lost when one gets too close to a project.

My abandoning of the pieces, leaving them to rest and age, only to return to work and depart again and again became the unexpected thematic core of the compositions – a modality leading to a theme arrived at without pretense or much conscious interference on my part.

That theme, put simply, is the epiphany of distance.

Potential environmental uses:

Close sounds for old rooms, sometimes heard, sometimes lost. Atmospheres for dust motes buoyant upon the stillness of an ancient evening's sunbeams. Incense for silent bookshelves near open windows where rain is sometimes heard. Dark colors for attics where the wind whispers over rooftops in Ray Bradbury's empty Martian towns.

released May 9, 2016

Created by Terry Skaggs between September 14, 2010, and April 30, 2016.

Materials used:

"Hymn to the Lonely Places" – loops of film music, other 'found' sources

"Each Breathless Moment a Reminder" – synthesizer

"Resonance from a Forgotten Dream" – electric guitar

The title "oeno" was chosen as a perhaps not-so-subtle nod to Brian Eno, and because Oeno is a lonely place in the middle of a vast sea.

My youth was experienced through the sonic lens of '70s European electronic music, the ambient sounds of Eno, and the darker side of '80s new wave, post punk, and new romantic.

Today, I create the soundtrack for my life; an accompaniment for the existence that I've known.
