Requiem 05:18

about

'Mark Hollis' wears its inspiration rather obviously. It gained its title as I performed it live on a cold January Saturday. Tragically, six weeks afterwards, Hollis passed away.

At its inception, the piece was simply about the joy of hearing a bare piano played in a live room, stark notes and phrases moving through and around the space, suggesting fragments of half-forgotten songs of distance and time.

It was created in anticipation of Piano Day 2019 -- but now, after Hollis' departure, the piece has also become a haunted, inadequate memorial.

"Luminous & Abandoned" owes its inspiration to the brief backing instrumentation near the end of 'Mark Hollis'. I enjoyed the feel of these sounds and removed the piano, expanding upon the ideas just to see where they'd take me.

Together, these three pieces are part of a whole. The first segment is an organic/acoustic half that is delicately supported by synthetic underpinning. The second segment is a synthetic descendant evolved from its more organic forebear.

Finally, "Requiem" was assembled and mixed shortly before release in late March, 2019, to serve as a proper exclamation point to this cycle of music.

Today, I create the soundtrack for my life; an accompaniment for the existence that I've known.
